Scholarship Summary:

Master Graduate Teaching Assistantship in Fisheries at Arkansas Tech University

DR. John Jackson, interim Dean of College of Natural and Health Sciences; Professor of Fisheries Science is searching for a graduate student who is interested in studying the conditional occupancy, diet, and habitat of Rocky Shiner Notropis suttkusi in the Little River Basin, Arkansas.

The field work will include sampling fishes using beach seines, and measuring stream habitat variables. The student will have the opportunity to add their creative input to the project while working with a team.

Benefits:

  • The student will be compensated through a grant, and there is a possibility to teach undergraduate labs during the fall and spring semesters.
  • A tuition waiver will also be provided. While the majority of the field work will be conducted during the hot summer months, there will be additional sampling required during periods of higher flow in winter to monitor seasonal impacts.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries, Biology, Ecology, or a closely related field.
  • The ability to work safely and effectively in difficult field conditions is required, and a passion for fishes is essential.
  • The candidate must be able to work independently as well as a team member who contributes to a respectful, productive, and inclusive work group.
  • This position is ideal for individuals who aspire to pursue a career in fisheries, stream, or aquatic ecology.

Requirements:

  • Prior experience with R and GIS is advantageous.
